The life of a students is filled with all kinds of events and entertainment. Most of us refer to this student time as the best period of our life going back in our memories to the good old days when we were in school. But for those who are students today it doesn’t seem that way at all. There are so many things a student has to do that sometimes it seems impossible to handle all of the assignments given by professors. Those who one day were students know pretty well what it is like to choose between writing an essay and going to a party. Obviously, in order to keep up with assignments while keeping the fun time with friends one needs to possess strong time management skills. This is not something difficult at all. It is not a science but rather a reasonable approach to managing different tasks efficiently.
Most Valuable Resource
Time is the most valuable resource people have. All of the students have equal amount of this resource – 24 hours in a day. The fact that some students successfully manage their time achieving academic success proves that good time management skills can make a huge difference in the life of a student. This is about how one controls and organizes available time.
Principle #1. Plan your time.
When you take time to plan the things you will be doing for a week it may seem like you are wasting your time since you actually could have done something instead of just sitting and planning. But this will pay off in the long run. If you plan everything in advance you will motivate yourself to study since it will be a part of the plan that you will be following. Planning your time will also help you prioritize to take care of the urgent and the most important tasks first. Besides, if you start doing that you will stop asking yourself a question ‘How to stop procrastinating?’. When you have everything planned (and written down), it is more likely that you will get things done on time. Another benefit of planning is that it actually makes you more productive in what you do as well as gives you more freedom since you will know when you should get things done and how much of a free time you are going to have. Every successful company has short-term and long-term planning events – that is how they draw a path to their success. Students can do the same thing for themselves in order to make sure they are right on track with their academic assignments.
Principle #2. Develop a Schedule.
This one is very similar to the first principle; it is simply narrowed down to specifics. Because it is one of the most important things you can do while planning your academic life we have decided to have this principle separated. Creating a realistic schedule is extremely important because if you overload yourself you won’t achieve much.
You may want to start from prioritizing your goals and then allocating specific time slots for their achievement. When you have your goals specified and set it will help motivate yourself while studying and following the schedule. If you have big projects to handle it is best if you break them into smaller chunks. Many people ask themselves how to stop procrastinating. Well, the answer is right here in the schedule. It makes the life easier as you will develop a study routine which will inevitably reduce procrastination levels. Lastly, be flexible when developing a schedule. It is most likely that not all things will work out the way you planned so be ready to adjust whenever necessary.
Principle #3. Follow the Plan.
Now this sounds like an obvious thing, right? It does. But the matter of fact is that all of students have a temptation to forget about the plans and not follow them. Keep in mind that just having a plan doesn’t automatically mean you have organized the time available in an effective manner. Very often peer pressure can dictate what you may consider important and, therefore, may ruin the planned studies. Instead, you should focus on the academic goals and your top priorities. So whenever you have a temptation to go off the plan remember your goals and priorities and why you are doing what you are doing at the moment. In other words, motivate yourself to study by going back to your values and goals you have set.
Have you ever heard that your classmates have spent all night studying? Or maybe your friends spent all weekends with the books working on various writing assignments? Well, it is not about the time you spend studying but rather how you spend your study time. So you don’t have to follow someone’s example; you should focus on what works best for you. Whenever you plan your study time you have to understand that some subjects will naturally take more time than others. Don’t focus on things you like doing the most; very likely there many other things you have to do.
Many students ask how many hours per day they should study in order to maximize their academic results. Well, there is no universal answer that will work for everybody. But we have developed a rough estimate of how much time one should devote to academic assignments depending on the year of study.
1st year: 90-100 minutes (1.5 hrs) per day
2nd year: 120 – 140 minutes (2 hrs – 2.5 hrs) per day
3rd year: 150-200 minutes (2.5 hrs – 3 hrs) per day
4th year: 240 minutes (4 hrs) per day
5th year 300 minutes (5 hrs) per day
If you spend that amount of time daily in most cases you will have your academic assignments done without any hassle. Again, this is a rough estimate which may change during the exams preparation. But the aforementioned principles along with this model of a timetable should help you motivate yourself to study maximizing their academic results.
