Literature-Based Teaching Reading Approaches
Nowadays, it is quite debatable to discuss reading instructions in education. There are several methods that a lot of experts insist on learning, including methodical rule learning, story reading (stories must be based on those rules), and questions answering (questions must be related to the story). On the other hand, other specialists argue, that a literature-based approach is a must and students should read authentic material in a natural setting. They consider this method much more effective to teach students in a classroom.
Advantage: Greater Thoughtfulness. The majority of teachers prefer this method of teaching children to read because of higher thinking levels. If a traditional way of teaching makes children answer just trivial questions concerning a story, the literature-based one, on the other hand, forces kids to get into the text deeply and, as a result, give argumentative answers. The vivid benefits are vocabulary improvement, reading comprehension, an enhanced reading ability, and an increase in word-stock.
Advantage: Originality. The supporters of the literature-based method state that it is extremely important to use authentic material but not the old one recommended by textbook-based programs for teaching reading. These textbooks are often likely to be boring, whereas natural texts are usually thought to be provoking. Original literature may also serve as a door to introducing new cultures, social hierarchy, as well as story lines.
Disadvantage: Teacher’s Point of View. As always, there is a dark side of this, as it may seem, flawless method. For many teachers, it seems to be a rather difficult and hard perceiving system. It is really difficult, especially for young teachers, to use this method as it is quite challenging to come up with a system of teaching. Also, they may not cope with children’s assessment. Since the literature-based method is still not very popular among schools, teachers may struggle to find appropriate materials or literature selection and creating exercises or other tasks to reflect the text.
Disadvantage: Future Development. Looking for necessary material that will be used for students’ skill improvement will be a really difficult task. Moreover, creating a system that will gradually proceed from year to year is almost unimaginable. As a result, the lack of system will decrease students’ capabilities to improve their skills methodically. In addition, it may prevent students from acquiring certain skills completely. Sometimes, the most effective teaching strategies may easily fail when pupils advance from grade to grade.
